Set Up VPN for Windows
Configure VPN for Windows in two steps:
Add a VPN Networking Entry
- On your desktop, right-click My Network Places, then select Properties.
Note: If you are running Windows XP and do not see My Network Places on your desktop, you need to make the icon visible. See Making My Network Places appear on your Desktop for instructions.
- Double-click Make New Connection. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Select the Connect to the network at my workplace radio button, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Select the Virtual Private Network connection radio button, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Type NUVPN into the Company Name field, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Type vpn-public.vpn.northwestern.edu into the Host name or IP address (for example, microsoft.com or 157.54.0.1): field, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Select the Anyone's use radio button, then click Next. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Click Finish.
Configure a VPN Networking Entry
- Right-click on NU VPN, then select Properties from the Contextual menu.
- Select the Options tab. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Check the Display progress while connecting checkbox.
- Check the Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc. checkbox.
- Un-check the Include Windows logon domain checkbox if it is checked.
- Select the Networking tab. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Select Automatic from the Type of VPN: drop-down menu.
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
- Click Properties. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Select the Obtain an IP address automatically radio button.
- Select the Obtain DNS server address automatically radio button.
- Click OK to close Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
- Select the Security tab. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Select the Typical (recommended settings) radio button.
- Check the Require data encription (disconnect if none) checkbox.
- Click IPSec Settings…. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Check the Use pre-shared key for authentication checkbox.
- Type nuit into the Key: field.
- Click OK to close IPSec Settings window.
- Select the Advanced tab. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Click Settings…. A window similar to the following will appear:
- Select the On (recommended) radio button.
- Click OK to close the Windows Firewall window.
- A window similar to the following will appear:
- Click OK to save your NU VPN Properties changes.
