How to integrate a SATA AHCI driver in a Windows XP Setup CD

Issue:

Many users would like to have Windows XP on their machine installed instead the preinstalled Windows Vista.

The problem is: when trying to install Windows XP on a newer machine with an "SATA AHCI controller", the harddisk would not be recognized.

The reason is: Windows XP has no SATA drivers included on the setup CD and the HDD would not be recognized from the installation wizard.

Summary:

This tutorial describes step-by-step how to integrate the SATA AHCI controller driver in a Windows XP Setup CD to install XP on a machine which is equipped with an SATA AHCI controller.

By creating this special Windows XP SP2 Setup CD, it will not be necessary to load the driver from an external USB floppy disk drive during the installation procedure (by pressing "F6") which is necessary to enable SATA AHCI support for the installation wizard of the operating system.

Resolution:

1. Needed Software

A Genuine Windows XP CD (Home/Professional) with Service Pack 2 integrated. In case of no integrated Servicepack 2 on the Windows XP Setup CD, you can integrate it with the below mentioned tool.
Slipstreaming tool which integrates the drivers on the Windows XP Setup CD.
In this tutorial the freeware tool "nLite" was used for integration of the drivers (http://www.nliteos.com)
Driverfiles which are needed for the integration: "IAAHCI.INF", "IAAHCI.CAT", "IASTOR.INF", "IASTOR.CAT", "IASTOR.SYS", and "TXTSETUP.OEM"
You can either download the driver package from the Toshiba Driver Download Site (http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp) or from the Intel website (http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/imsm/).
CD-Recording software to write the generated image to a CD/DVD (e.g. "Ahead Nero")

2. Downloading and unpacking the driverfiles

Attention: The filenames in this tutorial are for a system with an "ICH8M SATA AHCI controller" and must not match the drivers and chipset of your system.

Step1:

To find out which chipset is installed in your system, right-click on "My Computer" -> left-click on "Properties" -> left-click on the tab "Hardware" -> left-click on "Device Manager" and scroll down to "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" -> left-click on the square to expand the tree and check which chipset is installed.

In this example an "Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller" (also called "ICH8M") is installed:

Please replace the filenames and paths from the tutorial with your drivers which match the chipset in your system.
(For example: If you have an "ICH7M" chipset, use the "ICH7M" drivers for integration on the Windows XP SP2 setup CD)

Step 2:

Drivers from the Intel website:

In case of downloading the drivers from the Intel website you must make sure you have downloaded the appropriate driverpackage for your system!!
Attention: The filenames in this tutorial are for a system with an "ICH8M SATA AHCI controller" and must not match the drivers and chipset for your system.

Unpack the the driverfiles by running the downloaded file (i.e. IATA78_ENU.EXE) with the command line parameters "-A -A PC:\".
Open a commandline and type the following to extract the files:

Please follow the wizard which appears after executing the command.
After the installshield has finished, the needed files are now available in the folder you have typed in the commandline:

Copy these files to the newly created folder in "Step 3"
Drivers from the Toshiba Drivers Download site:

In case of downloading the drivers from the Toshiba Driver download site (http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp) unpack the downloaded file to a folder on your harddisk (i.e. C:\stormng-20070827133046)
Go to the folder where the files were extracted and go into the folder "F6flpy" to choose the drivers for your chipset:

Copy the files from the chosen folder to the newly created folder in "Step 3"

Step 3

For the integration of the drivers the folder "DriverDisk" is needed. Create this folder and copy it in a folder of your choice (i.e. "C:\CDImages").
Copy the files from the downloaded driverpackage to this folder:

3. Copying the Windows XP Setup files

Create the folder "XPCD" in "C:\CDImages" :
Copy all files from the Windows XP CD to the folder "C:\CDImages\XPCD"

4. Integration of the driver files (Example is given with "nLite")

In the first dialog "nLite" asks for the preferred language. Choose the language you prefer (in this example "English") and continue with "Next":
In the next dialog, "nLite" asks for the folder which contains the Windows XP setup files. Search the folder by clicking on "Browse.." and choosing the folder "XPCD".
Continue to the next screen by clicking on "Next":
In the following dialog choose the "Buttons Drivers" and "Bootable ISO". Continue by clicking on "Next":
In this dialog click on "Insert" and "Single Driver" to choose the needed drivers:
A window will open and ask for an "*.ini" file. Go to the folder where the drivers are and choose the "iaahci.ini". Click on "Open":
Choose the chipset which is installed in your system and click on "OK". If unsure which chipset is installed, go to "Step 1" of "2. Downloading and unpacking driverfiles"
In this example the drivers from the Intel website were loaded which contain all available drivers. If you choose the driver from the Toshiba website only one driver will be available which must be chosen.

In this example the previously determined "Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller" (also called "ICH8M") will be chosen:
The driver is now ready to be integrated into the new Windows XP image. Click on "Next" to continue to the next step:
Please wait until "nLite" has finished the integration procedure and click on "Next":
The drivers are now integrated and the image is ready to be created. Choose "Create Image" and click on "Make ISO" to start the image creation:
The image will be created after you have chosen the destination folder and the filename.
After creation the ISO file can be written on a empty CD/DVD with a burning program (e.g. "Ahead Nero"):
Now you can install WindXP on your machine without the need of an external USB floppy drive.

How To Install XP Onto USB Thumb Drive

This article is not about installing from a USB device, we’ll show you how to actually install a full working version of Windows XP onto your USB thumb drive.

Whenever Windows gets into a blue screen of death or endless reboot loop after a series of repairs done because of a virus infection, the feeling is devastating. So much effort that has been put into working on the reports or files that are still in the computer may be gone for good.

If only you still have the chance to get them out, Just give you one day back in time and you will swear to god that you will backup everything. All you ask for is just one or two files. What if I told you that you can install one functioning Windows XP into a thumb drive and keep it safe somewhere? When the day disaster strikes, simply take it out and hook up to the computer. You will have one functioning Windows XP running right from the thumb drive or external storage. And I am not talking about the BartPE live CD. It is one whole full Windows XP running right off a thumb drive.

To make things real simple, I have already prepared those files that require modification ready made and can be downloaded. You will need to replace these specific files and overwrite the ones that are in your original Windows XP CD and re-package it in order for the magic to work. Download and unzip this file.

Put those files aside first. Now you will need to copy the whole contents of your Windows XP CD to a folder. You will need to replace these files from I386 folder, actually they are the ones that you have downloaded. Do note that it is important that the files stay in full caps and it has replaced the old files. It is possible for both files to exist in the same place with one in upper case and the other in lower case. If the files end up in lower case, the whole thing will not work as well.

Once you have replaced those files with the ones that I have created, it is time to re-pack everything back. You can use programs like magiciso or other equivalents to compile the files back into a single ISO file. Or you can use this Imgburn program. Start the Imgburn program. Select “Write files / folders to disc”. Now you will see the main interface. Click on the “Advanced” tab, then click on the “Bootable Disc” tab. Put a tick on “Make Image Bootable”. Click on the browse icon and select your boot file.

Note that you will need to insert this XP boot.img file first before you burn the CD or it will not be bootable.

Now drag and drop the contents of your modified XP into imgburn program. Insert a blank disc and burn. Use a CD that has 700 meg as the file size is quite big.

Click on burn and the disc will be created. Imgburn will prompt you for suitable adjustments to the disc profile. Say yes to those suggestions.

Before you install, you will need to prepare your thumbdrive. Download this format utility file. Hook up your thumbdrive, start this program and format it to NTFS.

Now in order to avoid any accidental overwriting of your current Operating System, shut down your computer and unplug all hard disks. Just unplug the power cable and it will do just fine. Also unplug any devices that are assigned any drives, like printers, external hard disks or even multi-card readers and mobile broadband dongles. This has to be done to ensure that the thumb drive gets allocated the C:. Or else the installation will not be able to get through.

You can now proceed with the installation as you would by setting the boot sequence to boot off from CD, for users who are unable to boot off this bootable CD, search the Bios setup page for a setting called AHCI. You will need to activate that. If you are successful, the message to hit any key to start should show. You will see that the C: is now your thumb drive and just go through the whole installation. The entire procedure is pretty similar to what is shown in this article.

The only problem is that the whole damm installation is bloody slow. Just copying of the files before the first reboot takes 30 to 45 mins and the whole installation takes all the way to around 5 hours. This is because the thumb drive does not have any “paging files”.

But the good news is that once the installation is complete, the startup is decent. Just remember to hook up your main hard disk back on when the thumb drive Windows is running and it will allocated swap file using your main hard disk. Everything will be much faster after that. But it still feels like running Windows XP on a Pentium 1 CPU. Here’s the image of the screen shot taken inside the Windows XP running from a thumb drive. It clearly shows that I do not have any other hard disk apart from a 4 Gig Sandisk Cruzer thumb drive.

One tip that I recommend users is to use clone software to clone the thumb drive out to a file. Since the thumb drive is only 4 Gig, you can burn the cloned image to a DVD and keep it. So when you need the portable Windows XP, just clone it back to any thumb drive. You do not need to go through the painful 5 hours again. I hope this article on how to install XP to USB will be helpful to readers. I have only tested in in a thumb drive. Readers who have tested this out in other external storage, please post the results of your outcome, if a certain USB hard disk is able to boot up fast, this is one very useful portable Windows XP that can come in handy in a disaster.

Install XP Using A USB Thumb Drive

Install XP via USB thumb drive is a useful technique since netbooks do not have any CD drives. You can use any thumb drive as the Windows XP operating system installation CD.

Installing XP operating system using a thumb drive is a very useful technique and it can come in handy in PC repairs such as a situation when a CD drive has failed or in a situation where the bootable XP simply refuse to boot off the drive.

This technique will come in very handy especially when more and more people are using netbooks that do not have a CD drive. You will need a flash thumb drive with at least 2 Gig. I used a Cruzer Sandisk 4 Gig flash drive in this guide.

This guide may be long and intimidating, but I have provided a lot of screen shots and made the guide as detail as possible. It is not too difficult to do it as long as you go through the post slowly and do it step by step. Do not go too fast and end up misreading some of the instructions.

You will need to download these 2 files

The USBprep file and the bootsect file, extract them to separate folders. You may wish to extract the USBprep file to the desktop or anywhere you deem fit but for the bootsect file, extract it to a folder called “boot” for example and copy this folder to the C: directly. This will make it easier for you later on when you need to use DOS commands. Do not extract the contents of the bootsect.zip file to C drive directly,there is a file inside this archive that is actually a MBR record. For those who do multi-boot with 2 or more Operating Systems in one personal computer, you will end up with just one XP operating system later on.

Insert the Windows XP operating system installation disc into the drive so that it shows up in the explorer.

Hook up your USB flash drive to your personal computer. Open the USBprep folder and double click on usb_prep8.cmd file.

You will see a DOS Window full of text and you can get past this by hitting any key on the keyboard. The next thing that will start up will be the PEToUSB program. Your flash drive will be automatically detected by the program.

Click on start and it will ask you if you want to continue, click on the start to do a repartition and reformat, select yes and click OK when it is done.

You can close this USBToPE window but do not close the DOS prompt yet, you will notice that it has changed to a full page of menu. Ignore that and press the Windows key + R. Type cmd and hit enter.

Type cd\ [Hit enter]

Type cd\bootsect [Hit enter, “bootsect” is the folder that you created for the bootsect archive.]

Type bootsect /nt52 m: , where m: is the drive letter of your flash thumb drive assigned by Windows operating system.

You will see a confirmation message that Bootcode was successfully updated on all targeted volumes.

Close this Dos prompt and return to the previous Dos prompt that was deliberately left opened with a text menu.

Press 1 and you will need to select your Windows XP installation disc.

Press 2 and you will be asked to key in a drive letter that is not currently taken. The default selection should do just fine. Or simply choose some funny drive letter like drive “s”.

Press 3 and you will need to select your flash drive that you intend to use as the bootable flash. Which is m: for me.

Press 4 and you will be asked if you want to format, select “Y” and press Enter. You will be asked to hit any key to continue. Wait a while until it asks you to hit any key to continue again. Now it will ask you for permission before starting the copying process.

This is because the whole process will take around 15 minutes. If you feel that you don’t have the time, you can do that another time.

Finally it will ask you if you want the the USB-stick to be the Preferred Boot Drive, select “Yes”.

Another question will ask you if you want to unmount the Virtual Drive, select “Yes”.

Now you can pull out the thumb drive and close all windows operating system that you do not want. The installation thumb drive is ready.

You will see such contents in the thumb drive.

You can now use this thumb drive to boot off and perform a format and re-install of XP. This process has been tested on 2 devices, a Sandisk Cruzer and a Sony Micro Vault.

One more tip for readers of this article, all you need is to do this once. Copy out the whole contents inside the thumb drive and zip it up somewhere. When you need this boot disk again, all you need to do is to format the drive using Windows operating system or simply delete all the files in the drive.

Do the bootsect /nt52 [drive letter] procedure and unzip all the contents into the thumb drive. You do not need to go through the entire process all again. Also, if you need to do a total wipe of your drive before the installation, remove the thumb drive first. I encountered a strange issue whereby the XP thumb drive became corrupted when I loaded the DBAN (Darik’s Boot And Nuke).

The installation procedure is slightly different from using a normal CD. Unplug all USB devices especially those with external storage like printers with SD card drive and multi-card reader. If you are unable to remove the multi-card reader, just unplug the power off the device. This is to prevent the situation whereby the C: ends up being taken by another device accidentally. When you boot up using this thumb drive, you will see 2 options.

You will need to choose the 1. TXT Mode Setup Windows XP, Never unplug USB-Drive Until After Logon.

You will go through the exact sequence in this format video shown here. But remember this is very important, if you have just purchased a new hard-disk or the drive assigned to the hard-disk is not C:, you will need to press the reset button or try the CTRL + ALT + DEL to jump out of the installation immediately after Windows operating system has done the formatting.

Choose the text mode installation again, and this time round you will notice that the drive that you want to install Windows should be C: now. If it is an old hard-disk and the drive is already given the allocation of C: during the first attempt you do not have to force the reset. Allow it to copy all the installation files and it will proceed with a reboot.

Once again, boot off the thumb drive. You may need to set the BIOS again and again or if your motherboard supports boot menu like mine, you can press the F11 key in my case to bring up the selection when you see your boot logo screen.

Now choose GUI Mode Setup Windows XP, Continue Setup + Start XP. It will continue with the installation. Once you enter this mode, you do not need to care about the menu anymore on the next reboot. But do not remove the thumb drive yet. It will need it to copy files off during the installation phase.

You can only remove the thumb drive after you have successfully login once. If you don’t feel safe, with the thumb drive still in place, do a few reboots and if it can enter with no issues you can remove the thumb drive and the Windows is ready.

A few pointers and things to take note while installing XP using USB.

1) If you have multiple hard-disks with one having an existing functioning XP, unplug that hard-disk first or else the MBR will get over written by the current installation and you will screw up the old installation. Once you are totally done with the installation on the new hard-disk and making sure that the hard-disk can boot up by itself independently. You can hook back the old drive and you will be able to multi-boot between the 2 Windows XP by choosing the hard-disk to boot up first by choosing it from the boot priority. Whichever drive has been put to boot up first will have the right to start up its Operating System.

2) If for any reason you unplug the thumb drive half-way, you will end up with an error saying that the hal.dll is corrupted and it needs you to re-install a new copy of that file which equates to start all over again.

BlueStacks, the Android runtime development environment could be turned into a viable business after the company received $7.6m in Series A funding and has now signed a partnership with Citrix.

BlueStacks got its first public demonstration this week at the Citrix Synergy conference, with the BlueStack-Citrix partnership allowing the software to be delivered through the Citrix Receiver showing just one of the ways BlueStacks could be put to practical use rather than being just another cool Android development tool.

What makes BlueStacks so exciting is the way it can replace the current Android emulation that developers must currently use to test their apps inside Windows. Current emulation methods cause their own inherent problems, such as degraded performance – problems that no longer exist when using BlueStacks according to Ars Technica.

As most Android application developers know, running Android software on a Windows PC has historically involved emulation—which impairs performance and adds considerably to resource overhead. BlueStacks has overcome the performance barrier by building a native x86 Android runtime that doesn’t have to rely on emulation. The company says that Android applications running on its stack will be highly responsive on Windows and won’t suffer from the kind of lag that developers are accustomed to experiencing when using Google’s emulator.

In an interview with BlueStacks CEO Rosen Sharma, Ars Technica were told how the software developers working on the project have been working tirelessly to make the stack as seamless as possible in order to make Android apps feel just like native Windows software when being used. An added beauty to the whole system is the fact Android apps coded for the operating system’s native APIs don’t need to be re-written in any way, removing another barrier for developers.

Sharma goes on to say that the company hopes that one day mobile devices such as convertible notebook computers could come pre-loaded with both Windows, and Android applications that would come into play when the machine is converted into a tablet.

So let’s cut the rant short and learn how we can Overclock our Asus Eee Pad Transformer Android Tablet to a whooping and stable 1.6 GHz.

Requirements:

Rooted Asus Eee Pad With Custom Recovery Installed.
Custom Overclocking / Undervolting Kernel.

How To:

The first step is to make sure that you have root on your Eee Pad with Recovery installed. You can head to the official XDA rooting thread posted here and click here for installing Recovery. I believe that after rooting , you can install ROM Manager from Android Market and flash a compatible ClockWorkMod Recovery.
Now download Custom Overclocking Kernel for Asus Eee Pad from requirements section above and save the zip file on your desktop.
After this connect your tablet to the computer and mount SD Card as Disk Drive.
Now reboot your Asus Eee Pad Transformer in Recovery. You can either reboot by powering off your device and then use the button combination or use ROM Manager.
Once you are in Recovery, make a Nandroid backup by navigating down to Backup / Restore option. It isn’t necessary but this backup will be your only way out if things don’t quite work as planned.
After you are done making a backup of your current Firmware, go to recovery main menu and select Install Zip From SD Card.
Now in the resulting menu, select the TF101-05-27-0620-SPICY-MEATABALL.zip and flash.
Wait for the installation / flashing procedure to complete and then reboot your device.
Once the device reboots, go to Android Market and download SetCPU.
Now launch SetCPU and scale the processor according to your choice. Please note that keeping your processor speed to max i.e. 1.6 GHz can reduce battery life.

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal released, reviewed. ~~Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal beta is already here and in a few days time, the final release will happen.~~ We have already reviewed the latest Ubuntu 11.04 and we think it is ready for prime time, well, almost. We did encounter some amount of instability in the new Ubuntu Unity mostly because of Compiz, but overall we believe Ubuntu 11.04 is going to be a release to look forward for. Leaving all that aside for now, let's just concentrate on things you could do after installing Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal.

Things to do After Installing Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

Many things about this post will be similar to our previous write up on things you need to do after installing Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. But not everything. Ubuntu with classic GNOME desktop is now defunct and Ubuntu Unity has come to replace it. Unity is the new face of Ubuntu and there will be no more special desktop and netbook editions of Ubuntu. Instead, Ubuntu Unity will simply took its place. Now, let's take a look into the things you need to do after installing Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal.

Installing Restricted Extras and Updating Repositories During Ubuntu Installation

You can now install restricted codecs package(which include Adobe Flash, MP3 codecs and such) during installation of Ubuntu OS itself.

Notice the arrows pointing to the boxes in the screenshot above. If you tick both of them during the Ubuntu installation process(make sure you are connected to the internet before doing so), restricted extras package will be installed automatically and you will be able to play mp3's and watch flash videos(YouTube videos for example) out of the box.

But there is a catch. If you have a slow internet connection(which is very rare these days), ticking the boxes shown in the screenshot above will unnecessarily lengthen the installation process. I for one prefer to do all that after installing Ubuntu. If you are like me, the next two steps are for you.

Update Repositories

After you install brand new Ubuntu 11.04, the first thing you need to do is to update repositories and make sure you have the latest updates installed(Like I said before, you need to do this only if you haven't ticked the boxes shown in the above screenshot).

Open Terminal(Ubuntu 11.04 Keyboard Shortcut: Ctrl + Alt + T) and copy-paste the following command into Terminal.

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

Done. Ubuntu repositories have been successfully updated.

Install Ubuntu Restricted Extras

Install the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" package. This will enable your Ubuntu to play popular file formats like mp3, avi, Flash videos etc. Click Here OR simply copy-paste the command below into Terminal to install the package(You need not do this also if you have ticked the 'right' boxes).

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Done

Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)

Though installing the restricted extras package will solve most of your problems, you may not be able to play dual layer dvds yet in your Ubuntu.

For that, you need to install libdvdcss2 package from medibuntu repositories. Simply do the following in Terminal.

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2

Done.

Check For Availability of Proprietary Hardware Drivers

In my case, all the hardware drivers including graphics, sound and wireless drivers were enabled automatically. But this may not be the case with everyone.

If you are among the not-so-lucky, open Applications dash from Unity dock (Ubuntu 11.04 Keyboard Shortcut: Super + a) and select 'Additional Drivers' application(see the highlighted app in the screenshot).

Check for additional drivers available and activate the ones you want. In 90% of the cases, this will do the trick. Those who were not able to get their hardware drivers enabled yet will have to do fair amount of digging through ubuntuforums.

Install Compiz Config Settings Manager

Compiz desktop effects are available in your Ubuntu by default and if you have any kind of 3D acceleration available(graphics driver ie), you are good to go with Compiz.

Now to tweak Compiz desktop effects in Ubuntu, you need to install "compizconfig-settings-manager" package. Click Here OR simply copy paste the following command into Terminal to install "compizconfig-settings-manager".

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Done. Compiz Config Settings Manager(CCSM) is significant as far as Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal is concerned. We will get to that later on.

Essential Ubuntu Unity Keyboard Shortcuts

Productivity can be increased significantly in new Ubuntu Unity desktop if you know the essential Unity keyboard and mouse shortcuts.

Enable Transparency of Unity Top Panel

Launch CCSM. Hit Super + a and search for CCSM.

After launching CCSM, select Ubuntu Unity Plugin from 'Desktop' category. Now choose the Experimental tab from above.

There you will see the 'Panel Opacity' option. Change it to the value you like.

Increase/Decrease the Launcher Icon Size

Just as before, Launch CCSM(Super + a and search for CCSM) and then browse to Ubuntu Unity Plugin. Choose 'Experimental' tab.

Adjust the value of 'Launcher Icon Size' by simple scrolling. The default value of 'Launcher Icon Size' is 48, but I like it around 40.

Change Desktop Size

By default, Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal gives you four workspaces to play around. Keyboard shortcut for activating the four workspaces is Super + s. Now, if you want to increase/decrease that number do the following.

Launch CCSM yet again, and select General Options from the category 'General'. Select the tab 'Desktop Size' and choose the values you want. Simple as that.

Install Nautilus-Elementary in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal

I can't use Nautilus these days without implementing the improvements brought about by the Nautilus-Elementary hack. So here is how you install Nautilus-Elementary in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. Also read our Nautilus-Elementary in Ubuntu 11.04 review.

Copy paste the following commands into Terminal to install Nautilus Elementary in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal.

EditStep 1 — MacBook Air 11" Model A1370 Teardown

A new contender in the computer featherweight division has arrived!
We got our hands on the new MacBook Air 11" A1370, and judging from the picture on the box, it's thinner than we expected.
Technical specs on the thinnest Apple computer to date:
- 1.4GHz or 1.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
- 2GB DDR3 SDRAM (build to order option of 4GB)
- 64GB or 128GB Flash Storage
- NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor

EditStep 2

We think this is absolutely awesome, and a couple of MacBook Air generations overdue.
Compensating for the lack of an optical drive, the box includes a USB software reinstall drive. The drive is 8 GB total, and contains both Snow Leopard and iLife '11.
The drive is bootable by holding down the "C" key on startup, just like a normal DVD restore disc.
The USB drive appears to be read-only, but we haven't tried any serious hacking to prove otherwise.

The new MacBook Air's Magsafe power adapter has the same 45W 3.1A 14.5V rating as the old model, but at a fraction of the size.
The power button is now integrated into the keyboard, instead of it being part of the upper case.

Measuring in at 11.8" wide and 7.56" deep and tapering off from .68" to .11" in height, the new MacBook Air looks a lot like a midget among dwarvescompared to the old models.
A frontal view reveals the omission of the IR sensor and sleep LED.
The flip-open port door has been scrapped, and the new model manages to fit an extra USB 2.0 port along its right edge.

Apple apparently doesn't want you inside this thing. They decided to use 5-point "Pentalobe" security screws to attach the lower case.
For this teardown, we had to file a couple of flathead screwdrivers to take out the funky screws. We have since found the correct 5-point driver to fit it.
Here's a 1366x768 wallpaper version for the new MB Air owners out there. We won't tell where you got it from.

Drumroll please!
Lifting of the lower case after much struggling with those pesky case screws, we get our first look at the innards.
The inside of the MacBook Air is dominated by six individual lithium-polymer cells making up the 35 Wh battery.

The large battery assembly is held in by five T5 Torx screws.
Apple claims that the battery will last up to five hours with active use, and up to thirtydays in standby.
This battery is 35 watt-hours. Previous revisions of 13" MacBook Air machines have included 37 or 40 watt-hour battery packs. Since this Air has a smaller screen and lacks a spinning hard drive, we'd expect run time to be somewhat better than earlier Airs.

After another T5 Torx screw is removed, the 64GB flash storage board can be disconnected from the logic board. It would be easily user-replaceable if you disregard the strange 5-point Torx needed to get inside.
The Mini PCI Express form factor SSD drive is a completely custom part, and will probably only be available through Apple support services, thereby putting another nail in the coffin for user-serviceability.

The mSATA SSD unit appears to be assembled by Toshiba and is model number THNSNC064GMDJ.
There are six main chips on this custom board:
- Four Toshiba TH58NVG7D7FBASB 16GB flash chips which make up the total 64GB.
- Toshiba T6UG1XBG Solid State Drive controller.
- Micron OKA17 D9HSJ DDR DRAM cache.
The new SSD is 2.45 mm thick compared to the platter-based 5.12 mm thickness of the old Air's drive. Being smaller in two of three dimensions definitely helps the new Air achieve a super-slim profile.
The SSD weighs in at a mere 10 grams, compared to the 45 grams of its spinning cousin.

With the turn of a screw, out comes the wireless board.
Although it uses the newer Mini PCI Express form factor, the new MacBook Air uses the same Broadcom Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip as the current lineup of MacBook Pros.
The model number is BCM943224PCIEBT2.

Three T5 Torx screws secure the fan to the upper case.
All of the cooling and ventilation in the MacBook Air is provided by the single squirrel cage fan.
It's thinner and tinier than the regular MacBook fans, just like everything else in this machine.

The MagSafe, USB port, and sound card are all part of one smaller board that connects to the logic board.
There's a blob of glue on the ribbon cable connection points that acts as an insulator. This may prevent some electrifying results from occurring should the contact points wear through the plastic sheeting and touch the aluminum case of the Air.
The Air sports a Cirrus Audio 4206ACNZ audio controller. We saw this same chip we found in the latest MacBook Unibody and Mac Mini

Three T5 Torx screws secure the ectomorphic logic board in place.
Like most recent Apple laptops, the heat sink comes out attached to the logic board. This is nice, as you'll only need to remove the heat sink and reapply thermal paste if you're replacing the logic board.
Unfortunately, like all previous MacBook Airs, the RAM is soldered to the logic board and is not upgradable. Apple does offer a 4GB RAM option at the time of purchase, but if you opt for only 2GB and decide you want more RAM later you'll be out of luck.
Our advice? Go for 4GB.

After removing eight T5 screws, the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU is the only thing remaining that affixes the heat sink to the motherboard.
The heat sink on the new MacBook Air is considerably smaller than all previous models. It weighs only 10 grams. Based on the tiny heat sink, it seems that the Ultra-Low Voltage 1.4 GHz Core 2 Duo CPU is a cool chip.

With the help of a plastic opening tool, the speakers come out next. These stereo units pump out... well... some mad wattage, probably around 1-2W.

The back of the trackpad has a Broadcom BCM5976A0K chip on it as well as a Cypress CY8C24x94-24L PSoC chip.
- The CY PSoC chip is likely responsible for the multi-touch capabilities on the trackpad as it has touch capability and has been found on many MacBook trackpads.
The board is cleverly grounded by little arms extending from the metal trackpad hinges.

We can now remove the display from the lower case.
The 11.6" MacBook Air features a resolution of 1366x768. That's a few more pixels and noticeably more widescreen (16x9 vs 16x10) than the 1280x800 resolution of previous Air models.
The bigger display in the second picture is from the earlier generation MacBook Air. If you look carefully, you'll see that Apple's removed the microphone from the display assembly. The microphone now lives in the body of the computer, right next to the headphone jack.

Once you manage to take off the bottom cover, all the parts are pretty easily replaceable.
Opening the bottom cover is quite difficult if you don't have the right screwdriver. It's clear that Apple didn't want people to open their machine.
All the components -- including RAM and hard drive -- are proprietary, meaning that no off-the-shelf parts will work in it without serious rigging.

[Linux] Clone a Hard Drive Using an Ubuntu Live CD

Whether you’re setting up multiple computers or doing a full backup, cloning hard drives is a common maintenance task. Don’t bother burning a new boot CD or paying for new software – you can do it easily with your Ubuntu Live CD.

Not only can you do this with your Ubuntu Live CD, you can do it right out of the box – no additional software needed! The program we’ll use is called dd, and it’s included with pretty much all Linux distributions. dd is a utility used to do low-level copying – rather than working with files, it works directly on the raw data on a storage device.

Note: dd gets a bad rap, because like many other Linux utilities, if misused it can be very destructive. If you’re not sure what you’re doing, you can easily wipe out an entire hard drive, in an unrecoverable way.

Of course, the flip side of that is that dd is extremely powerful, and can do very complex tasks with little user effort. If you’re careful, and follow these instructions closely, you can clone your hard drive with one command.

We’re going to take a small hard drive that we’ve been using and copy it to a new hard drive, which hasn’t been formatted yet.

To make sure that we’re working with the right drives, we’ll open up a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and enter in the following command

sudo fdisk –l

We have two small drives, /dev/sda, which has two partitions, and /dev/sdc, which is completely unformatted. We want to copy the data from /dev/sda to /dev/sdc.

Note: while you can copy a smaller drive to a larger one, you can’t copy a larger drive to a smaller one with the method described below.

Now the fun part: using dd. The invocation we’ll use is:

sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdc

In this case, we’re telling dd that the input file (“if”) is /dev/sda, and the output file (“of”) is /dev/sdc. If your drives are quite large, this can take some time, but in our case it took just less than a minute.

If we do sudo fdisk –l again, we can see that, despite not formatting /dev/sdc at all, it now has the same partitions as /dev/sda.

Additionally, if we mount all of the partitions, we can see that all of the data on /dev/sdc is now the same as on /dev/sda.

Note: you may have to restart your computer to be able to mount the newly cloned drive.

And that’s it…If you exercise caution and make sure that you’re using the right drives as the input file and output file, dd isn’t anything to be scared of. Unlike other utilities, dd copies absolutely everything from one drive to another – that means that you can even recover files deleted from the original drive in the clone!

The purpose of this guide is to show the process involved in tracing an email. The first step required to tracing an email is finding out the headers of the email. What are headers? Email headers are lines added at the top of an email message that are used by servers as the email goes on route to get delivered. Generally email clients only show the standard To, From, and Subject headers, but there are more.

1) Enabling Email Headers

Step 1:Once Logged into your Gmail Account open the Email whose headers you want to view. Click on the “More Options” link in the message next to the date of the email.

Step 2: Now click the “Show Original” link.

Step 3: This link will popup a new window the headers and the body of the message.

Enabling Email Headers For Hotmail

Step 1:Once logged in, click on the "Options" link in the upper navigation bar.

Step 2: Now click on the "Mail Display Settings" link.

Step 3: Change the "Message Headers" option to "Full" and click ok.

Step 4: Go to your inbox and open any one of your email. You emails show now contain additional headers.

Enabling Email Headers For Yahoo

Step 1:Once logged in, click on the "Options" link in the upper navigation bar.

Step 2: Now click on the "General Preferences" link.

Step 3: In the paragraph titled Messages and locate the "Headers" heading and select "All".

Step 4: Go to your inbox and open any one of your email. You emails show now contain additional headers.

2) Understanding Email Headers

In this example the “Sender” located at sender@exampleuniversity.edu want to send an email to “Receiver” located at receiver@exampleisp.com. The sender composes his email at his workstation in the university’s computer lab (lab.exampleuniversity.edu). Once completed the email message is passed to the university’s mail server called mail.exampleuniversity.com. The mail server seeing that it has a message for receiver@exampleisp.com, contacts someisp.com mail server and delivers the email to it. The email is stored on someisp.com server until Receiver logs on to check his/her inbox.

In this example, four headers will be added to the email message. This first header is generated by email client on lab.exampleuniversity.edu when forwarding it to the mail server at mail.exampleuniversity.edu.

The following header is added when mail.exampleuniversity.edu transmits the message to mail.exampleisp.com.

The following header is added when mail.exampleisp.com stores the message on the server for Reciever.

The following header is added when Reciever downloads the email from home machine called reciever.local.

3) Tracking The Orginal Sender

The easiest way for finding the original sender is by looking for the X-Originating-IP header, this header is important since it tells you the IP Address of the computer that had sent the email. If you can not find the X-Originating-IP header then you will have to sift through the Received headers to find the sender's ip.

Once the email sender's ip is found go to http://www.arin.net/ to begin a search.

Now click on the "NET-24-16-0-0-1" link.

Scroll down the page untill you find the OrgAbuseEmail field.

Remember to include all the headers of the email along with an attached copy when filling a complaint.

Backing up your data

Insert the disk in the CD/DVD drive and when windows autorun prompts you to run the Windows 7 installer, don’t run it and instead select the option to browse/open the DVD.

In the DVD, under the support folder, there will be a folder named migwiz.

Run the program named, migsetup.exe. This is the Windows Easy Transfer tool. Microsoft wrote Windows Easy Transfer to help you transfer all your data and settings to a new machine when upgrading to a newer operating system.

As you can see, with this tool, you will be able to migrate all user accounts, email, user data and pretty much everything else from Windows XP to Windows 7.

The only thing that the Easy Transfer tool cannot take care of are the third party programs that you have installed, so you’ll need to reinstall them again. This is a limitation imposed by Microsoft and it is, currently, not possible to upgrade from XP to Windows 7 and while keeping all the third party programs as it is.

Click Next at the welcome screen and you’ll be asked to chose one of three choices for the location where you want to store all the data that the tool will save.

I chose the “External Hard disk or USB flash drive” option and I recommend that you do the same since it sounds the easiest one. If your XP machine is connected to a network and you have a network share that you can use, feel free to select that option, and click on the Next button.

The next option is pretty self explanatory and is actually the only option on the screen so select “This is my old computer” and move on.

The easy transfer tool will then scan the various user accounts for all the data that it can migrate.

Click Next and select a password for the archive. This password will be later used on Windows 7 to complete the migrartion of your settings and data. And the last step of the process is to chose the location where the Easy transfer file will be saved. Connect an external hard disc to the machine, if you haven’t done so already, and select it.

That’s it.
